This meeting between MAGISNAT and the committee of the Fondazione Policlinico Agostino Gemelli IRCCS (Rome, Italy) discussed the importance of adopting a Mediterranean lifestyle to prevent neurological diseases.
It has been proven by numerous scientific studies that there is a link between diet and cognitive function.
Neurodegenerative diseases have a multifactorial origin. These lead to a progressive loss of neuronal activity, resulting in impaired cognitive functions of the brain. Consequently, the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), which with its healthy ingredients rich in antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune, neuroprotective, antidepressant, anti-stress and senolytic activities, play an essential role in the prevention and management of the above diseases.
In detail, this type of diet, being composed mainly of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, white meats, fish, nuts, olives, and olive oil, is rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, phytosterols, probiotics, and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, elements that have been shown to be beneficial, safe, and economical in the treatment of neurological diseases.
