The export of Italian agricultural products to the USA and the enhancement their healthy properties

Interview of Per. Agr. Andrea Bottaro

Thursday, 23rd June 2022, at Press Room of the Chamber of Deputies, Rome

On June 23rd 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. CEST, the new spin-off company of MAGI Group in America, MagisNat, will be presented at the illustrious Press Room of the Chamber of Deputies in Rome.
The presentation is a very important event for several reasons, including the location in which this conference will be held. For the first time ever the Chamber of Deputies, the largest official institution of the Italian government after the Ministries’ Council, is sponsoring an event of this kind: the birth of an Italian research spin-off that aims at promoting the Mediterranean diet, scientific research of natural molecules, the development of food supplements to help those who cannot follow a healthy Mediterranean diet, and the export of typical products of the Italian culinary culture.
Another aspect not to be overlooked is the presence at this event of professors and researchers from both Italy and the United States of America, the former participating in presence and the latter electronically.
Among these, there will be Dr. Andrea Bottaro, President of the AS.PER.A study center in Rome. His speech will focus on the export of Italian agricultural products to the USA and the enhancement their healthy properties.
Luckily, the Italian certification system for agricultural production ensures the defense of its image, engaging technicians on a daily basis in order to produce guaranteed quality certificates that are based on objective criteria; also enhancing the benefits said product can provide to human health. Another important aspect is traceability, which, in addition to the organoleptic properties of the products, is among the reasons leading to purchase.
Unfortunately, nowadays, it is not uncommon to find on the market food products that, due to dishonest entrepreneurs, turn out to be different from what is stated on the label or in the purchase commitment. This has done nothing but generate moments of uncertainty, which we are trying to overcome by proposing brands of certified food products that can also be useful for improving health.

The main products that are exported from Italy to the United States, both for appreciation and for significant and growing market shares, as related to the quantity of agricultural and food products exported from our country, are certainly wine, olive oil, cheese, and pasta. All these products—together with others—belong to the so-called “Mediterranean diet”, which has represented a healthy lifestyle. In the past, this nutritional style was appreciated only for the flavor and pleasantness of its foods, but today it also meets other requirements referable to the “health system”.
For a long time these product have been consumed simply “because they taste good”, but constant scientific researches have proven that “they are good for your health”, thus transcending individual tastes. It should be remembered that the Mediterranean diet is the best way to prevent some cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
Among the foods of the Mediterranean diet that can provide our body with the quality and quantity of nutrients that is necessary for the energy needs of each individual, we can find vegetables, fruits, fish, and meat, which must be consumed according to one’s basal metabolism (linked to age and daily life).
Moreover, other important products are extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and wine. In particular, extra virgin olive oil, known since time immemorial, is a fundamental component of the Mediterranean diet, being a source of mono- and polyunsaturated fats in perfect balance and having nutritional qualities that can provide what is required by organisms of all ages. In 2021, the United States imported about 380,000 tons of table oil, 73% of which was extra virgin olive oil. Of this volume, as Per. Agr. Bottaro states: “Italian olive oil is the first in packaged in bottles, which is why we are already seen as the homeland of olive oil. Also, olive oil and its fractions, even refined, but not chemically modified by FDA certification, represent 35% of the total of our world exports.”
These economic results were also obtained thanks to the scientific information that MagisNat will deal with, together with various professors and researchers. It is also important to promote awareness-raising actions towards the final consumers to be carried out on site, in order to educate them about the consumption of EVOO as the preferred dietary fat, and thus also contributing to reducing the manifestation of many pathologies, like for example atherosclerosis.
